canadian producer kevin mcphee made his idle hands debut back in 2011 with sleep and house 44 over a year on, he returns to the label with two floor friendly, house leaning cuts. a-side unwind takes the bumping bottom end and swung drums of early sneak and pairs it with punchy horn stabs and an infectious vocal hook. b-side, a jam, is slightly more subdued but equally as jacking with mcphees trademark loose percussion providing the foundation for lush uk house pads and a heavyweight bassline.

graded is a new label run by midland. it arrives after multiple releases on will sauls aus imprint and collaborations with pariah & breach. the focus of the label will be on vinyl, with full artwork sleeves, 180 gram pressings and locked grooves, it will however also be released digitally. initially the label will be used as an outlet for his own productions and collaborations, with a view to later releasing music from his peers. the first release contains two tracks which set the tone for the label, left of centre electronic club music.

purple velvet is chris james and lee dearn, two purveyors of deep and sensuous house music since forming in late 2011. having gotten to know each other at various late night music sessions, the pair have increasingly honed their own house sound that is as suited to the dark consines of a club as it is the sunnier vibes of an outdoor terrace. sparks fly is gritty, dirty yet soulful at the same time. desinitely the work of a duo with a promising production knack. on the slip back on on the boulevard featuring lisa d on saxophone and breathin are two late night drive jams, emotive and super lush. an ep to dance to, that moves your mind and your feet. deep music from the soul.

after their hot contributions for treats vol. 2, session victim prove indeed that they are on the roll with a funkafied and no holds barred ep that pays homage to their hip-hop roots. move me so starts rather simply, with just a guitar and a vocal, but you can hear a moving bassline and distant rhodes chords creeping up from the background. two minutes into the track and theres still no kick drum, although the level of excitement produced by the magnetic groove is almost unbearable. a filtered drum break finally gives way to a four to the floor beat that should turn any dancefloor into a frenetic party. the track builds with high energy, as the pounding bassline seems to be directly lifted from an early 90s hip-hop classic. the breakdown sees the vocal/guitar loop being played differently until the second part shifts gear and brings more surprises in the mix with the intro rhodes chords coming in and out.

hot british rising star james barnsley (get physical, catwash, esperanza) delivers his moan debut with this peak time dance floor bomb frigid which certainly does the business. to add to this heavy weight release there are two monster remixes from franco cinelli & luca bear and these guys need no introduction. also included on the ep is a solid remix from alessio mereu of james barnsleys beat yourself. this release is a record bag must and is certain to tear up the dance floor!

this is the second vinyl for the spanish label that is connected to discos paradiso record shop. agony forces (lycaon) express their experience better than ever. they are growing more and more. very high quality of modern techno. one of the two remixes is signed by an artist who doesnt need any introduction: ness. his style is unmistakable. the surprise is the other remix signed by dark vektor, pure electro that we dont hear much of these days.

nick lapiens debut release as metropolis garnered little attention when it materialized last year. a skeptical yet dedicated network of underground heads built up a subterranean buzz that has yet to spread into the daylight. that initial transmission was thick with the raw analogue flavors that have become ever-present in dance floor fare recently—but his is a sound that is dedicated to the emotive, narrative aspects of electronic music rather than simple fetishization or passing curiosity in the days of yore. this, his second release as metropolis, shows a more focused and patient hand at work. the titular track on the a side is a deep, psychedelic groover. melodies, textures and sequences undulate and intertwine within a lightless atmosphere guided by lapien with optimum restraint. equally pensive and gorgeous, the flood serves as a machine’s beat-less foil on the reverse. made up of little more than feedback and two slow, echo laden arpeggiated sequences, this is reminiscent of jean michel jarre’s more sinister moments: a brilliant paradox of economy and indulgence. expect to hear more from lapien here at sequencias. he has many more dark corners left unexplored.
